“Sea with Boat & Figure, Pride’s Crossing” by Emily SargentEmily Sargent, sister of famed American portraitist John Singer Sargent, is getting her moment in the spotlight with a new show at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. While her brother is best known for his paintings of Gilded Age high society figures, the Met’s collection showcases Emily Sargent’s softer, almost abstract style. Her watercolors, long hidden in obscurity, center on architectural studies and landscapes, striking a “dramatic” contrast to her brother’s incredible career as one of the most celebrated portraitists in American history, Artnet News noted. “There’s a sense of discovery seeing them,” one of the Met’s curators said, noting many of the paintings have never been publicly displayed. “We’re just starting to understand more about how she worked.” |
