Billionaire Michael Bloomberg is donating $80 million to boost Democratic candidates, marking a last-minute entry in a US midterm cycle dominated by big spenders.

Bloomberg is the party’s “late-arriving white knight,” The New York Times wrote, as Elon Musk has poured in more than $360 million to help Republicans — becoming the largest individual political donor in modern US history. Musk has also pledged SpaceX shares to every American child.

Faced with his own political setbacks, US President Donald Trump is also offering giveaways, including funds for farmers struggling with high diesel costs and $5,000 checks to Americans if Republicans retain Congress. “Trump is turning to a favorite political tactic in the midterm homestretch,” Semafor’s White House correspondent wrote. “Give people money.”
