The UK said Thursday it was prepared to align its tariffs on Chinese EVs with those of the EU, delivering a boost to Brussels as it negotiates with Beijing to narrow the trade gap.

European leaders have adopted a more aggressive stance to shield native businesses from a tidal wave of Chinese imports, which policymakers have blamed for deep job losses among European automakers and other sectors. So far, counter-efforts have involved both protectionist and industrial policies, including “Made in Europe” rules that have stoked discord among some of Europe’s largest economies.

Having won Beijing’s agreement to halve hybrid vehicle imports, Brussels is now eyeing checks on Chinese chemicals and machinery, Politico reported.
