President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters today that theyāre preparing to release a self-regulatory accord with AI frontier labs.
The still-unreleased pact raises questions about enforcement ā Johnson referred to āconsequencesā for AI companies that fall short ā and the depth of oversight.
Trump summed up his approach to AI safety by telling Semafor that āthere should be tremendous self-regulationā after a White House meeting with more than a dozen AI and tech CEOs, but Johnson billed the forthcoming industry pact as ārobust internal controls and layers of internal and external review.ā He added that āCongress is going to keep steady hands at the wheel on this. Weāll continue to assess and further deliberate in the days ahead.ā
Trump and Johnson lunched with the executives as the administration unveiled a new AI-powered site, America.gov, thatās aimed at providing easier access to government services.
Trump also told reporters after the meeting that the Justice Department and FBI would handle any regulatory issues with AI and that heād be signing an executive order today that replaces āartificial intelligenceā with āsuperintelligenceā in governmental communications.
He praised data centers, saying they have made communities very rich.
Trumpās laudatory comments come as bipartisan angst over the technology crests, alarming AI incidents proliferate, and global governments call for policy cooperation.
