UK foils suspected attack on air base used to strike Iran

British authorities held five men suspected of plotting an attack on a UK airfield used by the US to strike Iran, with investigators reportedly believing a motive tied to Tehran to be most likely. Sunday’s arrests highlighted the risks faced by countries hosting US military installations: Though American bases have long been seen as targets, the Iran war has amplified those fears.

Gulf countries, which have faced Iranian strikes on US military targets, appear not to be questioning their strategy, however: Regional powers “understand some of the challenges of having US military [bases],” the diplomatic adviser to the UAE president told Foreign Affairs. “But the war, and the Iranian attack[s], has made that more important, not less important.”
