A US judge ordered the White House to restore access for three news outlets, an episode that has highlighted a broadening erosion of democratic freedoms in the country.
The court’s temporary restraining order allowing CNN, MS Now, and Politico to return marks the latest step in long-running tensions between US President Donald Trump and the journalists covering him.
It came as an international body said that for the first time this century, it had not been invited to monitor upcoming US midterm polls.
Washington’s outsized global role means such erosions of norms and freedoms threaten the rule of law worldwide, a Stockholm-based think tank argued, while a Carnegie scholar warned, “a less democratic America is a less powerful America.”
