The film follows the final years in the life of Ian Charleson, a Scottish actor who starred in the Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire. It picks up in 1989, after Charleson, played by Andrew Scott, faces an AIDS diagnosis while trying to revive his career. When he finally lands a prominent role again, a lesion appears on his face.
The movie is “devastating” but gives viewers “a glimpse of a nuanced, non-monolithic community trying to survive during impossible times, joking and dancing and hopelessly hoping for sunnier days,” The Guardian wrote.
