Russia struck a Ukrainian passenger train close to the Polish border, narrowly missing one carrying European diplomats and a former British prime minister, the latest sign of Moscow’s escalation of the conflict.
Ukraine has mostly stymied Russia’s battlefield advance in recent months. However Kyiv’s dwindling defensive capabilities and Russia’s development of a new high-powered drone are tilting the war in the Kremlin’s favor, analysts argued.
Europe has pledged to boost Ukraine’s funding, though its needs remain largely unfulfilled as US support dwindles.
“Ukraine has bought the West four years with the blood of its soldiers and the ingenuity of its engineers,” former Google CEO Eric Schmidt wrote. “We cannot let it face another winter alone under Russian bombardment.”
