Semafor Recommends De Gaulle

De Gaulle, directed by Antonin Baudry.

The two-part historical saga follows Charles de Gaulle’s role in the French resistance during World War II.

The film picks up in 1940 after France’s defeat by the Nazis and chronicles de Gaulle’s efforts to show the Allies that France was still worth fighting for.

The film, which became an unlikely summer blockbuster in France, “blends the sweep of a wartime epic with the mechanics of a geopolitical thriller,” Variety said.

“The extraordinary response in France has demonstrated that this is not simply a film about history — it is a story that speaks powerfully to the present,” said an executive with Pathé Films, which produced the movie, as a US release date was announced for November or December.
