Iran and the UAE held their highest-level meeting since the start of the Iran war at the BRICS summit in India, where the two countries found a rare space for direct diplomacy.
The meeting came after months of escalating tensions, including Abu Dhabiâs suspension of trade with Tehran in August following Iranian attacks.
Together with a joint BRICS statement urging âmaximum restraint,â the outreach signals Iranâs effort to engage Gulf states directly, rather than relying solely on stalled US-Iran negotiations.
Iran plans to present Gulf nations with a planned temporary shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz Monday. âWhat India has done is keep the difficult conversations going,â a former Indian ambassador told Reuters.
