Russia’s president landed in India for a BRICS summit that looks set to underline a broader reordering of global alliances. The talks in Delhi — also set to be attended by China’s leader — point to India’s attempt to balance ties with global powers: It has long sought to deepen relations with the US, but is unlikely to meet Washington’s demands to curb relations with Moscow and is reportedly set to propose a strategic economic dialogue with Beijing.
They also come amid efforts by several smaller powers to hedge against an unpredictable US: Canada is strengthening ties with European and African nations, Qatar’s prime minister just visited China, and Vietnam’s leader is visiting Russia, France, the US, and Canada this month.
