Argentina said it would file criminal charges against an Israeli oil firm operating in the Falkland Islands, Buenos Aires’ latest salvo in its campaign to regain control of the UK-controlled territory. President Javier Milei has stepped up his rhetoric on the islands as he looks to boost his flagging approval ratings ahead of next year’s presidential election.

Though his striking turnaround of the economy once made him popular in a highly polarized country, stagnating incomes and stubbornly high unemployment rates have withered away his standing, pushing him to populist rhetoric as he looks to boost his reelection odds. Unpopular competitors are helping his case. “Milei’s saving grace may be his rivals,” The Economist wrote.
