President Donald Trump is struggling to find a way out of the conflict with Iran, as voters lose patience with the war and weapons stockpiles dwindle.
The path forward remains unclear, even as Trump has privately weighed dropping his long-held requirement for a nuclear deal.
Washington is unlikely to accept Iran’s latest list of demands to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
And while Trump has publicly downplayed reports of a weapons shortage, the issue is on his mind. Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg recently asked defense companies to “accelerate” munitions production, Bloomberg reported, a move Semafor has learned came days after Trump called Feinberg to discuss munitions.
Still, officials acknowledge there’s no quick solution.
“There’s not really a way you can fix this problem in a significant way in the next few weeks or months,” said one US official. “It’s going to take years.”
